As we approached the entrance to The Echo Park craft fair, we saw a huge line for something and naturally assumed that it was the ticket line. It ended up being the line for the Oaxacan Quesadilla Cart!
Street food is awesome in L.A.! The food truck craze across the U.S. started here and was inspired by the food trucks, carts, and stands that you can find practically everywhere. This one is a no-frills, old-school cart, which is a must-try!
Normally, Alejandra is found on the corner of Echo Park and Sunset Blvd. on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays, but apparently she can be hired for parties or events! One of the kids wrote her menu on a white board: Pork (Chicharron), Chicken, Potato and Chorizo (Papa con Chorizo), Mushroom (Hongos), Squash Blossom (Flor de Calabaza), and Mushroom of the Corn (Huitlacoche). The last one is hard to explain, but basically it is a mushroom fungus that grows on corn stalks. Sounds odd, but then again so are mushrooms if you think about it!
Alejandra makes each tortilla by hand by expertly shaping them from a huge container of blue masa. After patting it down, she throws it onto the hot surface and continues to shape it. I can’t believe she doesn’t burn herself, considering how quickly she moves!
In the cheese goes…
…and then the filling!
My fiend and I ordered the chicken on the left and the squash blossom on the right.
Then, it’s time to use the sauces! They were all ridiculously spicy, and considering how much I love spicy food, I think more sensitive people would have burned off their tongues. 🙂
The cactus was perfect for cutting the heat a bit. 🙂
This is what it looked like before I folded them back up and gobbled them up. Yum!
The tortillas were amazing. Somehow they were crispy and fluffy at the same time. The tortillas were extraordinarily fresh and beautiful (in my opinion). The fillings were so great! Although I am a veggie lover, I liked the chicken better, but I cannot wait to try the other fillings next time.
Now, I know exactly where to track her down, so I’ll definitely be back soon!
