Ever since Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams opened nearly a year ago in L.A., we have been treated to inventive flavors like Thai Chili, Sweet Basil and Honeyed Pine Nut, Berries and Burgundy, and Yazoo Sue with Rosemary Bar Nuts.
Well, Jeni’s New Winter Collection features six, all-new nostalgic flavors! What does that mean? The new collection is called “American Licks: Ice Cream as a Living Artifact” after the ice creams we loved as kids, but their popularity is in decline nowadays.
Which blasts from the past are included? Black & White Cookies, Candied Ginger, Green Mint Chip, Cherries Jubilee, Orange Sherbet, and Pralines & Cream round out the already impressive list of flavors. All of the flavors are available at Jeni’s 21 full scoop shops and online only through March 31st, so you know I had to head in right away for a taste!
When I arrived, all of the flavors were front and center! Also, I adore the packaging on the new flavors. As you may know, the regular menu items are in all white, so these definitely stand out!
I found out that the scoop shops will be “in character” for a few months, set up like a small museum even with an audio tour narrated by Jeni herself!
There’s even a “gift shop” with adorable souvenirs, like pencils, patches, T‐shirts, and collectable pins. Also, they have postcards with American Licks flavors for guests to fill out… and for Jeni’s to mail for free!
I tried each of the flavors, and they were amazing! In the end, I chose full scoops of six flavors, a mix of both new and regular flavors.
I have such a fondness for cherries and this sweet twist on one of my favorite ingredients is kind of addicting. I admit that I never liked Mint Chip ice cream as a kid, but this was just awesome! It’s also surprising to find out that the green color is amped up with spirulina. Amazing! Gosh, it looks like I have to admit yet again that I did not love “Cookies N’ Cream” as a kid… but yet another delicious scoop is making me second guess my past choices! I love the addition of white chocolate to balance out the dark chocolate cookie chunks.
Orange Sherbet
For the next three scoops, I made it a fruity trio! The Wildberry Lavender is so fragrant and delicious. The Black Currant Frozen Yogurt is made with similar ingredients to the Wildberry Lavender, but it is so completely different! One of only two frozen yogurts on the menu, it is super tangy and delicious! I had to pick the Orange Sherbet as my last flavor, because it was probably my favorite of the entire collection!
Here is the full collection in their full glory…

Pralines & Cream
Candied Ginger
As for the two flavors above that I didn’t include in my own scoops, I loved them both! In fact, my second favorite flavor in the entire collection is the Pralines & Cream because it reminds me of all those delicious pralines from New Orleans!

By the way, next time I head to Jeni’s, I really want to try one of their sundaes. They look so good! I’ll also make sure to swing by before the new flavors leave at the end of March because that Orange Sherbet is still on my mind… Are you ready for a scoop of your own?
