Are you ready for a short and sweet post? Today, I have an inventive dessert that is getting nationwide attention even though the one location has been open for mere months. Just like the Cronut, the lines for this original dessert are endless. I have tried my luck a few times, but I’m always in a rush and waiting a couple hours was out of the question. This time, I was in it for the long haul! I wanted my Milky Bun!
First of all, you’ll notice that there is practically no sign whatsoever that says Afters Ice Cream. A tiny lit-up sign on the door advertises their Top 5 flavors.
Once you step in, you see everything you need to know about a milky bun, including how to create it in four easy steps: (1) Cream, (2) Fill, (3) Seal, (4) Eat.
The interior is tiny, with no seats, with just enough space for a couple of items on the walls and inexplicable stacks of crates filled with Jasmine Tea for sale.
A huge baking rack holds all of the beautiful milky buns waiting to be stuffed!
And now, for the fun part. Picking the ice cream! Besides the top 5 flavors of Cookie monster, milk & cereal, Jasmine milk tea, cookie butter, and almond cookie, there are a slew of delicious flavors to sample. And yes, they let you sample all of them!
I tried all of them, including the Vietnamese Coffee, Mint Monster, Strawberry Cookie Cream, Churro, Acai Blueberry Sorbet, Lemon Lime Sorbet, and plain vanilla.
The mint monster is a twist on their popular Cookie Monster flavor, but minty and green!
Next, you choose as many fillings as you want to stuff into the bun. Cereal and cookies are popular choices, but they even have gummy worms!
They seal up the bun and hand it to you in a simple paper envelope.
Personally, I chose a Glazed Bun filled with a Milk & Cereal ice cream and Cornflakes. You can choose to have an unglazed bun if you would like it less sweet or if you choose a super sweet ice cream/filling combination.
I unsealed the bun a bit to peek inside and reveal the deliciously cold ice cream inside the warm donut-like bun.
After digging in, I realized that this was like the best breakfast ever. Cold milk and cereal with warm donuts? Who would have known?
I wanted to go original for my first go around, but I will definitely be bad and be more creative. I can’t wait!
